ST MARKS HOSPITAL
St. Mark’s Hospital is both a national and international referral centre for intestinal and colorectal disorders. Our trainers, Robin Kennedy and Ian Jenkins, have collectively performed laparoscopic colorectal surgery on over 1200 patients, undertaking > 200 resections per year.

Programme Summary
This programme has been developed to provide training for colorectal consultant surgeons with varying levels of experience. It is supplemented by the use of videos specifically designed to shorten the time taken to acquire this skill.
It is envisaged that each surgeon will develop their laparoscopic skills during 20 cases, over 4-6 months, although this is dependent on previous experience and ability. Each procedure is assessed and video recorded, prior to final assessment and sign off. The training at St Mark`s is run as an 'in reach' programme with patients either from St Mark`s, or from the surgeons own catchment area. Towards the end of the period it is likely that two of the training operations would take place in the visiting surgeon's hospital.
Our Team
Alongside our colorectal surgeons, we have a strong theatre team and excellent nursing staff. We offer peri-operative care delivered by staff with specialist expertise in enhanced recovery.
The Operating Theatre
We have a state of the art, hi-definition, integrated operating facility. This has been recently equipped and provides an optimal environment for training.
Entry to the Programme
Delegates will be required to register via the Lapco National Training Programme web site (www.lapco.nhs.uk).
Prior to clinical training consultants need to attend a laparoscopic colorectal theatre list with their team. It is necessary to have attended a course on laparoscopic colorectal surgery and to have seen at least 10 live procedures beign performed by experienced surgeons, prior to starting.
The Trainers
Robin Kennedy
Robin Kennedy is a Consultant surgeon at St Mark`s Hospital. He moved to St Mark`s in 2006 to set up the laparoscopic colorectal service. He has special interests in surgical training and enhanced recovery after surgery. Prior to coming to St Mark`s, Robin was a Consultant surgeon in Somerset for 14 years.
Ian Jenkins
Ian Jenkins worked as a trainee in the West of Scotland and has been a consultant at St Marks Hospital since 2008. He has a special interest in surgical training and expanded our Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery in the obese, as well as jointly developing the laparoscopic ileoanal pouch service.

National Training Programme in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery
Advanced laparoscopic training has been a mainstream activity of the mattu at Guildford since 1995. Laparoscopic Colorectal training has been a core activity since 2003. The mattu have run regular live surgery courses, team training events and masterclass’ for teams from the UK and mainland Europe. We also run regular laparoscopic colorectal courses for theatre staff. Preceptorship through the ACPGBI / ALSGBI preceptorship programme has also been delivered in an outreach format but has now ceased in advance of the new Natinoal Training Programme (NTP). The trainers also deliver animal training as part of the faculty at the European Surgical Institute in Hamburg. Laparoscopic colorectal courses can be accessed through mattu as well as supportive courses such as laparoscopic suturing. www.mattu.org
As part of the NTP the mattu, in association with The Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, offer an in-reach laparoscopic colorectal training programme for appropriate applicants. Surgeons and their teams will have the opportunity to operate in an ideal and state of the art operating theatre on their own patients with the support of the training surgeon. The dedicated operating lists will be staffed by nurses and anaesthetists experienced in managing complex laparoscopic procedures who are used to the training environment. It is anticipated that each surgeon will have access to up to 10 all day theatre lists over the period of 1 year and no more than one surgeon or one team will be present at any given list. The training opportunity will be focused purely on the training surgeon. Each list will have no more than two cases to allow plenty of time in an unhurried and supportive environment. The days operating will be supplemented by access to a training room within the theatre complex with the capacity for watching live surgery, reviewing edited and unedited videos from a video library as well as the trainees own recordings of the days surgery. Training stations for practicing laparoscopic skills are also available on site.
In order not to detract form the training opportunities available to SpR and clinical fellows at the training site we would like to invite surgeons accepted onto the training programme to come and operate on patients from their own Trust - where they are willing to do so. The admission of the patients can be organised through the Royal Surrey County Hospital. As per the wishes of the training surgeon, once discharged all follow-up arrangements including MDT decision making can be made at the base hospital. This will ensure continuity of care and be least disruptive to the patients management.

The ICENI Centre
The ICENI Centre has probably performed more laparoscopic colorectal surgery than any other unit in the United Kingdom, in excess of 1200 cases at the beginning of 2009. The staff of four laparoscopic colorectal surgeons, led by Professor Roger Motson, all perform resections using the same techniques, ensuring that a constant training experience is offered, regardless of which surgeon is working with you.
The facilities are first class with three Karl Storz 0R1 operating theatres available to provide a relaxed training environment. Our theatre staff are extremely experienced, many have been involed in laparoscopic surgery since we began in 1989 and in laparoscopic colorectal surgery since 1994.
As we frequently run training courses all of us, whether it be nurses, anaesthetists or surgeons, are very used to welcoming visiting teams.
We strongly believe that you will have an enjoyable learning experience in Colchester and that we will help you acquire the necessary skills quickly by our standard approaches to the colon and rectum. We are happy to visit your hospital for some of the cases in the latter part of the series of cases to assest the smooth transition to laparoscopic surgery in your hospital.
Professor Roger Motson
Professor Motson was one of the pioneers in laparoscopic surgery in the United Kingdom having, unusually for a general surgeon, started laparoscopy in 1980 and was performing laparoscopic cholecystectomy in 1986. He has been involved in all aspects of advanced laparoscopic surgery since 1989 and in laparoscopic colorectal surgery since 1994. He was President of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons in 1999. He established one of the first training courses in 1992 and has established the ICENI Centre as a leading centre for training, research and development.
