LAPCO TT COURSE OVERVIEW

The National Training Programme in Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery has 67 appointed Consultant trainers in 11 separate training centres in England.  A total of 48 (70%) of our NTP trainers have now attended or are scheduled to attend as either delegates or are course Faculty members, along with 17 Consultants (Non NTP Trainers). The Lapco TT (Train the Trainer course) is a 2 day interactive course for Consulants. The centres which will be running courses from now on will be Bradford, Colchester and Christie, Manchester which are open to colorectal consultants.The NTP have established a TT course available for all those currently delivering training to NTP Trainees. The purpose of the Lapco TT course is to ensure that the training experience is to a consistent high standard for all those involved in delivering, or receiving training across the Country.Lapco TT (Train the laparoscopic colorectal surgery Trainer) is a 2 day course which being lead by Nader Francis (NTP Trainer).  The Course Faculty have had input and involvement from Roland Valori, John Anderson and Siwan Thomas Gibson with their experience as National leads on Train the Colonoscopy Trainer (TCT) to assist with establising the Lapco TT Programme and course delivery.

1.0 COURSE STRUCTURE

The course curriculum encompasses a structure to a training episode looking at objectives for the trainee, the communication process in theatre and the feedback process.  Course photographs are provided at the end of this page to provide an indication of the set up, resources and presentation required for course delivery. The course requires the following resourcing: 

  • 1 Course Facilitators
  • 4 Faculty 
  • 6 Trainer Delegates
  • 2 Local Host SpRs
  • 2 Host Consultant Surgeons
  • Supporting Staff as required for equipment/course set up/AV
  • 1 or 2 Course Observers are welcome

Day 1:  This is a ‘dry skills’ day which incorporates classroom teaching with presentations from faculty members, and interactive role play for delegates on a series of training senario exercises. The role play exercises are carried out on operational laparoscopic stacks (2 required) with training models and abdominal trainers. In summary the programme includes:

  • Educational Theory in Content
  • Coaching practical skills
  • Coaching techniques for laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery coaching role play
  • Methods of assessment
  • Assessment role play
  • Training Episodes: Setting the scene and giving feedback - Set, Dialogue and Closure
  • Giving feedback in role play
  • Course review of Day 1

Day 2: This is a live operating day with all theatre activity transmitted through a live link to a seminar room where all faculty and delegates will be able to observe training episodes being undertaken. Each trainer delegate has the opportunity to participate in a 20 minute part of the procedure, and are required to brief, and debrief their trainee before and after the clinical session.The trainees in theatre will be local SpRs or NTP trainees registered with that training centre.

NB: All Delegates are required to participate in the all sessions over the 2 day course, and are required to have completed Honorary Contracts to participate which will be arranged between HR teams of the host, and visiting delegate trust by the Course Organiser.
