Audience: Suitable for surgeons, anaesthetists, nurse specialists, ward nurses, nutritionists, physiotherapists, pain specialists and members of an ERP team.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course each delegate/ team should:

  • Understand the background of the development of enhanced recovery
  • Be able to describe the surgical and anaesthetic considerations for enhanced recovery after colorectal surgery
  • Have an increased awareness of the impact on patients (and their relatives) undergoing enhanced recovery
  • Understand the role of patients and carer in enhanced recovery
  • Be able to discuss pre and post operative care and role of the theatre team.
  • Understand the options available for pain control
  • Have a greater understanding of the nutritional aspects of enhanced recovery.
  • Understand the role of colorectal specialist nurse and stoma care practitioner in enhanced recovery
  • Be able to describe the role of the physiotherapist and stoma care practitioner
  • Formulate a plan to introduce, or update, an enhanced recovery programme in their own centre

Course Content:

  • Opportunities to meet patients who have recently followed this care pathway
  • Interactive discussions on common difficulties in establishing and maintaining enhanced recovery
  • Short seminars on:
    • Background and history of ERP in UK
    • Surgical perspective
    • Anaesthetic considerations
    • Theatre practitioner’s role
    • Pre and post operative care
    • Pain control
    • Role of nutrition
    • Stoma care
    • Physiotherapy
